Walmart Drone Delivery Of COVID-19 Tests

Walmart Drone Delivery Of COVID-19 Tests

On September 22 Tom Ward, Senior Vice President, Customer Product, Walmart announced that Walmart drone delivery of COVID-19 at-home self-collection kits is now at the piloting stage.

Earlier, at September began to work delivery service by drones, it’s a fast, safe and comfortable way to get medicine or another items in a pandemic.

Sam Walton famously said, “I have always been driven to buck the system, to innovate, to take things beyond where they’ve been.” It remains a guiding principle at Walmart to this day. From being an early pioneer of universal bar codes and electronic scanning cash registers to our work on autonomous vehicle delivery, we’re working to understand how these technologies can impact the future of our business and help us better serve our customers,” Tom Ward said.

In collaboration with Zipline, world’s largest drone delivery network that delivered more than 200,000 critical medical products to thousands of health facilities serving more than 20 million people across multiple countries, Walmart hope to take place of national-scale operations across the United States.

COVID-19 Self-Collection Kits At-Home

After two drone trials, one to deliver select grocery and household essentials, and another to test delivery of certain health and wellness products, Walmart began piloting drone delivery of at-home COVID-19 self-collection kits. In partnership with Quest Diagnostics and DroneUp they want to start North Las Vegas now, and Cheektowaga, New York, in early October.

Walmart published terms for clients, to use their drone delivery: “Patients who qualify for drone delivery of the COVID-19 self-collection kits must live in a single-family residence within a 1-mile radius of the designated Supercenters in North Las Vegas and Cheektowaga. The kits will land on the driveway, front sidewalk, or backyard of the customer’s home, depending on where there are cars and trees.

There is no delivery or kit cost for customers electing to receive an at-home kit delivered via drone. Once the kits are delivered, the person will perform a self-administered nasal swab in the privacy of their home and send their sample back to Quest Diagnostics for testing using the included prepaid shipping label.”

Big Expectations For Walmart Drone Delivery

“We know that it will be some time before we see millions of packages delivered via drone. That still feels like a bit of science fiction, but we’re at a point where we’re learning more and more about the technology that is available and how we can use it to make our customers’ lives easier. Take for example our autonomous vehicle work with Gatik, Ford and Nuro – we’ve gained loads of valuable insight into how autonomous vehicles fit within our business,” – Tom Ward, Senior Vice President, Customer Product, Walmart said.

“There’s a lot we can learn from our drone delivery pilots to help determine what roles drones can play in pandemic response, health care delivery and retail. We hope drone delivery of self-collection kits will shape contactless testing capabilities on a larger scale and continue to bolster the innovative ways Walmart plans to use drone delivery in the future.” – he added.
