Care encompasses a broad spectrum of health services ranging from preventive healthcare to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. A pediatrician deals with biological, social and environmental influences on the developing child, and with the impact of disease and dysfunction on development.

A medical biochemical geneticist specializes in the diagnosis, evaluation, prevention, and treatment of patients with biochemical genetic disorders, defined as inborn errors of metabolism at any age of onset. Training does not include those skills and knowledge necessary to direct a clinical laboratory.
