Gainesville, Florida — The University of Florida College of Pharmacy has hit a high, climbing to the No. 4 slot in the U.S. News & World Report list of top pharmacy schools. This honor, after a strict review of more than 140 schools with approval, marks the second time in a row the place has ranked in the national top five. They shared the news on April 9th.
Dean Peter W. Swaan, Ph.D., M.Pharm., was very happy with the success. He said, “Our elevation to No. 4 in the U.S. News rankings reflects the strides made by our college to train the next generation of healthcare leaders while establishing one of the nation’s best research and patient care programs in academic pharmacy. The entire Gator pharmacy community celebrates this achievement, as our new national ranking demonstrates the commitment to excellence shared by our faculty, staff, students, trainees and alumni.”
In 2023, with Dean Swaan in charge, the college began to shine, which continued into 2024. The school received $38 million for its research work, a record high, securing third place in the nation, according to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The college incorporates AI technologies in the teaching, research, and patient healthcare services. It also broke a record with 154 students and alums snagging places in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists residency match – more than any other pharmacy school. UF College of Pharmacy has partnered with tech experts at Malachowsky Hall for Data Science & Information Technology. This year is a significant milestone for the college as it celebrates its 100th anniversary, making it the oldest health college at the University of Florida.
David R. Nelson, M.D., senior vice president for health affairs and president of UF Health, the university’s academic health center, thought about the college’s significant growth in the last ten years: “It has been impressive to track the trajectory of the UF College of Pharmacy over the past decade when it comes to the national rankings. As a world-class health care system, we need elite programs focused on ensuring every individual receives the exceptional care they deserve, and the UF College of Pharmacy stands at the forefront of pharmacy practice, research and education.”
The college is the only spot in Florida in the latest top 50 list from U.S. News & World Report, which comes out every four years, and it always shows how well the UF College of Pharmacy is doing. There is good, lasting work and the big part the college plays in education and health care, including the fact that it moved up from No. 14 in 2012 to No. 9 in 2016 and has stayed in the top 5 since 2020.
