The FDA has confirmed minocycline topical foam 4% (Amzeeq, Foamix) for the processing of inflammatory injuries of non-nodular medium to sharp acne vulgaris in patients nine years and older.

Minocycline is a tetracycline-class medication that was initially established as an oral formulation in 1971.

“The support of AMZEEQ is exciting news that presents a much-needed option in the therapy of moderate to severe acne,” said Linda Stein Gold, MD, executive of Dermatology Clinical Research and Division Head of Dermatology at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI in a statement. “Minocycline has been a committed staple in acne therapy for decades but has only been possible in oral or systemic formulations. With the support of AMZEEQ, I can now offer my patients a new, powerful topical treatment choice with a favorable tolerability profile.”

The current approval was based upon the results of three phases, three clinical trials that involved 2,418 patients. In each 12-week, multi-center, randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled study, patients with reasonable to severe acne vulgaris were used with either topical minocycline foam 4% or vehicle foam.

Investigations Prove

Regarding Foamix, the studies found a statistically substantial illness recovery with the topical minocycline foam versus vehicle for the co-primary endpoint of absolute reduction of fiery lesions. Studies 2 and 3 demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in IGA—measured as a score of 0 (clear) or 1 (almost clear) and at least a two-point reduction from baseline.

Minocycline foam was also reportedly well-tolerated with no treatment-related severe adverse events announced throughout the trials.

Minocycline topical foam 4% is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to any of the tetracycline or other ingredients within Amzeeq.

The topical foam will be prepared for prescribing in January 2020.
