Internists are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, infections and diseases affecting the heart, blood, kidneys, joints and digestive, respiratory and vascular systems. Many general surgeons also possess expertise in transplantation surgery, plastic surgery and cardiothoracic surgery.
